The Utah Procurement Code provides that a procurement may be made without competition when the University determines that there is only one source that can reasonably meet the University’s need for the required supply or service, as described in Utah Code Ann. § 63G-6a-802.

The Purchasing Department has received the following request for sole source procurement

Product and/or Service to be purchased: D6 Phaser Benchtop X-Ray Diffractometer

Sole Source Supplier: Bruker AXS LLC

Earliest Proposed Purchase Date: January 31, 2024

Buyer Name: Jon Pezely

Sole Source Justification:

This system is the only one in the market that can do grazing incidence diffraction on a benchtop setting. This grazing incidence capability will be crucial for the characterization of organic and polymeric materials as this is the only way these materials can be investigated by diffraction techniques.

The added grazing incidence capability in this setup makes this equipment an unique system that allow us to probe samples at different rotation angles and no other vendor offers this ability. Also, having this capability on campus expands the potential user base as researchers working on the fabrication of highly oriented films will be able to characterize their samples without the need of spending money and time at synchrotron laboratories.

The D6 Phaser – Benchtop X-ray diffractometer is the only setup in the market with an embedded computer. This is crucial given that this equipment will be placed inside an inert environment glovebox and as such we cannot afford to also have a computer in this confined space.
