The Utah Procurement Code provides that a procurement may be made without competition when the University determines that there is only one source that can reasonably meet the University’s need for the required supply or service, as described in Utah Code Ann. § 63G-6a-802.

The Purchasing Department has received the following request for sole source procurement

Product and/or Service to be purchased: Ultrasonic transducer array driver

Sole Source Supplier: Scintica

Earliest Proposed Purchase Date: March 05, 2024

Buyer Name: Anthony Ferrara

Sole Source Justification:

My lab uses ultrasound to treat brain disorders in a minimally invasive manner. We need a system that allows us to 1) drive multi-element (256 elements) ultrasound transducer arrays and 2) emit at least 10W of power per element.

The Scintica HIFU256 is currently the only system that provides both capabilities.

There are products that allow either functionality #1 or functionality #2, but not both. We need both functionalities at the same time. Implementing both functionalities in one system requires a dedicated platform; systems serving either function cannot be simply combined.
