The Purchasing Department has received the following request for sole source procurement

Current date: 20250421

Product and/or Service to be purchased: Interqual Utilization Management Software

Sole Source Supplier: InterQual

Earliest Proposed Purchase Date: April 22, 2025

Buyer Name: Andrew Christofferson

Sole Source Justification:

InterQual is a proven and widely utilized product already contracted by the University of Utah Hospital and University of Utah Health Plans. As an evidence-based clinical decision support tool, InterQual provides comprehensive criteria to assess the appropriateness of a patient’s care, treatment, or hospital stay, ensuring high-quality, medically necessary care.

Key Reasons for this product is the only source:

  • Proprietary Clinical Criteria – InterQual’s peer-reviewed, evidence-based guidelines are unique and updated regularly.
  • Regulatory Compliance – Meets standards for Medicare, Medicaid, NCQA, and The Joint Commission.
  • Exclusive EHR Integration – Seamlessly connects with major EHR systems like EPIC, ensuring efficient workflows and automated decision-making.
  • Industry Standardization – Many payers and providers mandate InterQual for consistency in medical necessity determinations.
  • No Equivalent Alternative – Other solutions, like MCG, differ in methodology, industry adoption, and interoperability, making InterQual the only fully compliant and widely accepted option.

This Sole Source will be valid for a period of three years.
